Painting Abstracts in Oil

Abstract in Blue andPink

As many of you know from reading my blog I am taking an art class at the Toronto School of Art called Painting Abstracts in Oils.  I am finding it rather frustrating waiting for the oil paint to dry between layers.  I guess I have got used to quick drying acrylics.

We have several exercises to complete one of which is about addition and elimination, revealing and concealing.  I don't know what got me started but I decided to cut out some shapes and paint around them to get started and then I found it really interesting to start covering parts up and overlaying with other colors. It's quite different from what I usually do and because of the colors I chose it's ended up a very happy looking piece.  I would be interested in hearing comments about this type of work.  Do you find the hard edged shapes and purely non representational design interesting or does it leave you cold?

I love this piece and all it's layers of wonderful color and subtle texture. I watched the movie your recommended, Herb and Dorothy and it brought back many memories of my first solo show. All hard edge paintings. Of course our world has changed since then and our art reflects it.

I've just been looking at your work on fineartamerica and your website - very impressive, especially the beautiful music paintings and the wonderful translucency technique you used in some of the other paintings. But the abstracts also fascinated me. The one here is lovely. I'd like to have lots of it as wallpaper!!! Such happy colours and what a good idea!

Thank you Faith. I'm glad you enjoyed looking at my art. I have enjoyed doing the music series but I have also always loved abstracts. I used to do a lot years ago but recently I have been doing more realistic things. I find it's hard to keep to one thing when I enjoy so many types of art. I especially love doing figures and faces and hope to do more of those in the future too.

Susanne,
I love the color softness and depth to this. Your layering effects are where your painting technique truly shine.
I too enjoyed the Herb and Dorothy movie. I had seen it last year. Its unbelievable the amount of work they were able to amass.
Your holiday in Portugal looked amazing....the snow will be gone soon!

Susanne,
This piece is beautiful. The colors are so soft and your layering effect is where you truly shine. I especially like how you worked with the cutouts and negative space.
I am so used to acrylics I struggle when using oils at times now. I am trying to continue alternately using both, just to stay fresh.
